Art Education

I have taught PreK-8th grade art at Dickey Hill Elementary Middle School for the past eight years. Differentiation of instruction is utilized to address the variety of needs of the different types of learners within my classes. Hands-on art making techniques reinforce math, language arts, social studies and science concepts and skills. Consistent and respectful classroom management ensures that students are able to maximize achievement within a healthy learning environment.

Community Engagement

I have a special passion for promoting family and community engagement at Dickey Hill. I have served as the Chairperson and Co-Chairperson of our School Family Council as well as the Community Involvement Sub-Committee. My efforts include: attending many BCPSS workshops on the topic, recruiting colleagues, working as a team to implement plans to increase engagement, writing a monthly newsletter, fostering community partnerships, planning numerous special events, working with allocated funds for the events, executing fund-raisers, and maintaining the outdoor marquee. I would be happy to share more information about the many programs, partnerships and events, too numerous to describe here.

Ceramics

Since my first year teaching, I have volunteered my time two days a week after school to offer an Art Club. I believe we must provide opportunities for positive and constructive outlets for our students. For seven years I have partnered with the Middle School Ceramic Program, in conjunction with The Ceramic Museum of Art, to provide an art process that we would otherwise be unable to afford. My club has participated in the relief mural at Hollins Market. We are about to unveil a new relief mural created by us alone at the Baltimore Outward Bound Center.

Chess Coach

I have directed our after school Chess Team for the past six years. We have won a middle school citywide championship, as well as several individual undefeated trophies. Chess has been an outlet for what had been some disaffected students, including one such student Samual Macer, who was quoted in the Baltimore Sun about his involvement with our team. Baltimore City consistently ranks in the top three at the national level.

Mobile App Design

During the last 2 years I have had the privilege of working with some of the areas best mobile application development teams. I feel that this newly emerging platform is a natural progression for my artistic endeavors. Working in several capacities including Illustrator and User Interface Architect, I have participated in several projects that can be found in the Apple App Store & Android Marketplace today. I hope to expand my role in this quickly growing industry this summer while working on updates for some of my existing apps.

Personal Art

Art has defined me for as long as I can remember. I knew I would teach art as a sophomore in high school. I was a Maryland Distinguished Scholar of the Visual Arts in 1992. I attended MICA briefly, before giving birth to my daughter. She is my greatest work of art.

My style could be described as surrealistic, or realistic with an emphasis on composition, color and symbolism. My message is not new; the idea that life is a journey. There is a destination from the smallest molecules, to the physical journey that an individual piece of art takes, to the vast scale of movement in the universe. Art making itself, and the thought process involved is indeed a journey. Every decision we make guides us. This is why I am compelled to not only make art, but to teach it. My greatest influences include Casper David Friedrich, Maxfield Parish, Max Klinger, and the painting god, Salvador Dali.
